The Bue Marino Grottos

Everything that amazes and fascinates has a soul. It is so for the moon, the wind and for solitude; the sea has hidden its secret soul in this grotto. The deepest in the Mediterranean. Here fresh water encounters sea water creating a fairytale setting made of crystal clear pools and vivid white beaches. The walls of the cave, adorned with hanging stalactites, tell us that here, 140 million years ago, the sea was already the supporter of ll forms of life. Silence is the rule inside the grotto, as words before such beauty would make a voice tremble. C.S.

The name of the Bue Marino grottos derives from the ancient word for “ monk seal “, a mammal which used to visit this place up to a couple of decades ago.
The Grottos were opened to the public in the fifties and can be reached via the sea by excursion from the port of Cala Gonone in about thirty minutes.
They divide into two branches, the north and south branch. The part which can be visited (the south branch) is suitably equipped and illuminated and is made up of a vast tunnel, in which sea water penetrates, and several fresh water pools.
It features numerous interesting fossils, notably the oysters, which still adorn the walkway which ends at the seals’ beach, part of an immense hall where monk seals used to give birth to their young.
